Assessment Staff

Assessment staffs are made by gods for their celestial servants and are only rarely found outside of the Upper Planes. While you are attuned to this staff, you have a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. While holding the staff, you can use an action to expend a charge to cast zone of truth or detect evil and good , or two charges to use plane shift (save DC 17). It has a number of charges equal to your proficiency modifier and regains all expended charges at dawn.

Each assessment staff has a particular deity or equally powerful being who created it. You can’t attune to an assessment staff if you have an opposing alignment trait to that of its deity. If you do not have the celestial creature type, the staff’s deity will decide how much of its powers you have access to based on your previous deeds, potentially granting you additional powers if you prove yourself worthy (or at least improved).

Once attuned, you can’t break attunement with an assessment staff without the permission of the deity who created it, direct intervention by a different deity, or wish or similar magic cast at 9th-level. Breaking attunement by the second and third means causes the staff to self-destruct as a fireball spell cast at 6th-level, except it deals radiant damage instead of fire.
