Avantist

Class

Savants who practice Avantism pursue an experimental approach to magic inaccessible through traditional wizardry. By reconstructing spells from base principles (and stealing methods from more unorthodox magicians), Avantists have developed a flexible—if taxing—casting style that allows them to mimic any of the major magical disciplines, albeit only in their most rudimentary form.

Multiclassing Avantists with Warlocks

If you are playing an Avantist that also has levels in warlock , divide your savant level by 3 (rounded up), add your warlock levels, and reference that level on the Warlock table to determine your effective level for cantrips, spell points, and maximum spell level. This does not grant you access to additional warlock class or archetype features, and your levels in savant do not count towards level prerequisites for eldritch invocations.

1st LevelBonus Proficiencies

When you choose this archetype at 1st level, you gain proficiency with Arcana, one language. and one of the following: light armor, History, Investigation, Insight, Nature, Performance, or Religion.

Academic Exemplar

At 1st, 11th, and 19th level, you gain an expertise die in Arcana. For you, expertise dice in Arcana can be upgraded from d8 to d12, exceeding the usual limit on expertise dice. You also gain two specialties in Arcana and an additional Arcana specialty at 5th, 9th, 13th, and 17th level. You can always choose to use Intelligence on Arcana checks.

2nd LevelAvantist Magic

Avantist Magic is identical to the warlock’s Pact Magic feature, except where specified here. All subsequent features that mention spells in this archetype only affect spells gained through this archetype. Choose one of the following options for your spell list:

  • The bard , cleric , or druid spell list.
  • The warlock spell list, plus one expanded spell list from the warlock class.
  • Three schools of magic other than arcane, divine, or nature, two of which must be classical schools.

To find your number of cantrips known, spell points, and maximum spell level, divide your savant level by 3 (rounded up) and reference that level on the Warlock table. If you already know all of the cantrips on your chosen spell list, choose a second list from the options above to choose cantrips from. This does not allow you to choose any spells of 1st level or higher from the second list.

Instead of knowing specific spells, you prepare the list of spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from your chosen spell list. When you do so, choose a number of spells equal to your 1 + 1/3 your savant level (rounded up). The spells must be of a level that you are able to cast. Casting spells doesn’t remove them from your list of prepared spells. You can change your list of prepared spells whenever you finish a long rest by studying your notes for at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list.

You cannot use a spellcasting focus for your spells, and your spellcasting ability for these spells is Intelligence.

2nd LevelArcane Innovator

At 2nd level, you spend only half the gold and time to craft rare versions of spells and cantrips you can cast. You are always considered to have access to the appropriate library for crafting such spells, and you can always choose to use Arcana when crafting spells.

In addition, you are considered a wizard as well as your choice of a bard , cleric , druid , or warlock for the purposes of using magic items. Your second class choice must match the class you drew your spell list from, if possible.

6th LevelFavored Spells

At 6th level, choose a spell you are able to cast. You always have this spell prepared, and it doesn’t count toward your maximum prepared spells. You gain an additional 2 spell points that you can only spend on casting your Favored Spells, although you can use them in conjunction with normal spell points to cast your Favored Spells. You regain these spell points whenever you finish a long rest .

At 11th and 17th level, you gain an additional Favorite Spell. The spell points you gain from this feature increase to 5 at 11th level and to 10 at 17th level.

Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the spells you know and replace it with another spell from your Avantist spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

11th LevelRapid Reassessment

At 11th level, whenever you complete a short rest , you can exchange one of your prepared spells for a different spell you can prepare.

14th LevelResilient Mind

At 14th level, you gain proficiency in your choice of Wisdom or Charisma saving throws .

17th LevelUniversal Caster

At 17th level, you can prepare one additional spell of a level you are able to cast from any spell list.
